Introducing the All-New Tag Heuer Carrera 'Glass Box' Models

When it comes to Chronographs, there’s not doubt at the legendary status of Tag Heuer’s Carrera. Released in 1963, Tag’s stark competition, was of course Rolex and it’s iconic Daytona model. To commemorate 60 years of the Carrera’s production, Tag Heuer has unveiled 3 new models utilizing the iconic “Glass Box” construction of some of the first Carrera’s produced. There are 3 models - Two stainless steel Chronographs, and a super-cool Tourbillon model.

The Juice:

One of the things that set the Carrera apart from the Daytona in the 1960’s was the way it was constructed. It wasn’t “just another” chronograph, it was a uniquely designed case construction that utilized a plexiglass crystal that was domed over the edge of the case. It encompassed the tachymeter “bezel” under the crystal and almost acted like the bezel itself. Tag Heuer has brought back that feature, but instead of Plexiglass, the brand has opted for domed sapphire instead.

Pairing it down with a 39mm case was the right move. With a race to provide smaller mens watches being quite the reverse in the last decade, the trend downward in size is welcomed - Especially in the Chronograph space. As for the Tourbillon model, keeping the case at 42mm to accommodate the larger Calibre TH20-09 movement keeps it a manageable size - Which is also appreciated.

Carrera Glass Box Tourbillon

The model comes in two simple colors - A black and a blue. It’s a simple aesthetic. I’ve always found the Carrera to be one of the cleaner chronographs on the market with little distracting from the functionality of the watch, and I think this new ‘Glass Box’ has become one of my new favorites. It’s simple, legible, and there’s just something about being able to view the dial at that awkward angle on the wrist that I just love.

How much is the Tag Heuer Carrera ‘Glass Box’ Chronograph?

Price for the regular Carrera Chronograph is $6,450 USD, while the Tourbillon will require some deeper pockets at $24,050 USD - Still not terrible for a Tourbillon chronograph. You can read more about the watches at tagheuer.com.
