INTRODUCING: The Rolex GMT-Master II “Ghost” (Ref. 126710GRNR)

It’s that time folks. Rolex has just released their novelties for 2024 at Watches and Wonders in Geneva. While there aren’t too many major surprises this year, one release has become a bit of the front-runner for the brand. And that’s the GMT-Master II “Ghost” a GMT Master II with a uniquely monochromatic look that isn’t exactly normal for Rolex. Is it necessarily the most expected or exciting release from Rolex? No. But it’s a fun addition to what many would consider the brand’s most popular line of watches.

THE JUICE:

I’ve noticed in a lot of coverage, many enthusiasts were a bit disappointed in the GMT Master II release from Rolex. I think that a lot of people were expecting a Coke configuration of the model, and this more monochromatic approach wasn’t expected. I think the model is being well received though. It’s not as necessarily “out there” as some of the releases that we’ve seen from Rolex in the past, but it’s definitely well fitting into the GMT Collection overall. With so many bold colors and releases that we’ve seen over the last few years (Pepsi, Root Beer, Anyone?) it’s a little bit of a reprieve to see a more toned down look on the GMT Master II.

The GMT Master II ‘Ghost’ harkens back to the original black-only model released in 2007. 14 years ago, we saw the green accents added to the model, but this year we’ve added a lighter, more subtle grey color to it. For those who found the all-black GMT Master II to be a little boring, the Grey adds a pop of fun to an otherwise stealthy aesthetic to the brand. The added day-night divide is both useful and clean to the overall look of the watch, without being too loud or distracting. It’s still fundamentally a Rolex without all the bold colors or ego. With rumors of a number of discontinuations of popular, and bolder GMT Master II options (We’ll cover those too) the Grey/black approach to the collection is a welcomed one. Even if it’s not the most exciting.

Overall, I think that the Rolex GMT Master II ‘Ghost’ is a fitting design for the collection. The bonus option of the “out of the gate” selection of bracelet is sure to please, with the Jubilee and Oyster bracelets being arguably the most recognizable parts of a Rolex. While I think that everyone had their fingers crossed for a Coke configuration, the mostly monochromatic look will still please those looking for a more stealthy option than say Pepsi or a Batman. Is it the most fun release that the brand has ever produced? No. But it’s definitely something that fits well into the brand’s aesthetic DNA.
