Austin Butler's Cartier Watches and One Rolex

Austin Butler has made a name for himself this award season, seemingly storming onto the national scene with his critically-acclaimed portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s 2021 film Elvis. We just looked looked at Elvis’ Watch Collection, so we thought it would make sense to look at the collection of the man who played him. While Butler has adopted Elvis’ voice, he has not adopted his taste in watches. As a Cartier ambassador, Butler has been spotted in a wide range of Cartier models (a brand Elvis never wore). So let’s take a look at Austin Butler’s watch collection.

Austin Butler’s Cartier Tank Louis Cartier with Red and Opaline Dial

Ever since signing on with Cartier as a brand ambassador, you’ll be hard-pressed to find Butler wearing anything but a Cartier. Fortunately, Butler has many different models and styles to choose from. One of the more interesting Cartier watches we’ve spotted Austin wearing is the Cartier Tank Louis Cartier large model with red an opaline dial. This model of the tank is named after Cartier’s founder, Louis-François Cartier, in 1847. The opaline dial is outlined in red and the gold hour markers are placed on another red box. The Cartier Tank Louis Cartier with red and opaline dial Ref. WGTA0059 retails for $14,028.80 USD.

Butler’s second Cartier Tank Louis Cartier is toned-down but still gold. Butler was spotted at the London screening of Elvis wearing the more tradition Tank Louis Cartier with white dial and roman numeral indices. The watch comes in a small with quartz movement and large with mechanical hand-wind movement. The small model retails for $9,550 USD while the large model retails for $12,800 USD. Given the size on his wrist and the brown strap, we believe Butler is wearing the small model.

Austin Butler’s Cartier Tank Must Stainless Steel Black Dial

As a Cartier ambassador Butler has access to some pieces that ordinary people like you are me do not have access to. One of the pieces I’m talking about is the Cartier Tank Must in stainless steel with black dial. The monochromatic, black dial, stainless steel Must was originally introduced as a limited edition in 2021 to celebrate the reopening of the Geneva Cartier boutique. The watch was released as a regular production watch a year later in 2022. The watch case of the large model measures at 33.7 mm x 25.5 mm and houses a quartz movement that will last 8 years. The most striking feature of the watch, however, is the all black dial. There are no indices or or minute markers. The only writing on the dial is “Cartier” at 12 o’clock and “Swiss Made” at 6 o’clock. The Cartier Must Ref. WSTA0072 with black dial retails for $3,050 USD.

If you watched the recent SAG Awards on February 26, 2023, you’d notice that Butler was attending (as he was nominated as Best Actor for Elvis) and was wearing another Cartier. At first glance we thought it was the same stainless steel Cartier Tank Must we just featured. But, after looking closely at red carpet photos, Butler was clearly wearing a Cartier Tank Must in gold. Interestingly, while the steel model has a quartz movement, the gold watch is powered by a caliber 1917 MC hand-wound movement. The Cartier Tank Must in gold retails for $12,800 USD.

Austin Butler’s Cartier Tank Cintrée

While Cartier has collections that are not rectangular such as the Ballon Bleu and the Santos (which is square), Butler clearly likes the rectangular design of the Tank. However, he has been seen wearing the Cartier Tank Cintrée. This Tank Cintree was rereleased as a limited edition of 150 in celebration of the 100th birthday of the Tank. The case of the Tank Cintrée is not only longer than the other modern Tanks, but it is also curved from lugs to lugs. While we are sure the gold model was released as a limited edition in 2021, not much is known about a steel or platinum model. We know that Cartier did produce a platinum model in the 1920s. It is possible Butler got his hands on a vintage model for a GQ photoshoot.

Austin Butler’s Rolex Datejust 36 Two-Tone Ref. 116233

I had to go back to 2013 to find Butler wearing anything (identifiable) other than a Rolex. When appearing on The Carrie Diaries, Butler can be seen wearing a 36mm two-tone Rolex Datejust with gold dial, likely a Ref. 116233. If you don’t know The Carrie Diaries (I didn’t prior to researching for this article), it was a short-lived prequel to Sex and the City that aired from 2013-2014. The show followed a young Carrie Bradshaw in 1980s New York City. And well, Austin Butler wore a two-tone Datejust on the show. So that’s that.
