The A. Lange & Söhne Lumen Collection: A Detailed Guide

A Lange & Sohne Datograph Lumen ###

Germany's premier watchmaker Lange is a master of movement finishing. Behind Lange's classic silver dials and simple cases sit some of the most elaborate hand finished movements available on the market, arguably the centerpieces of every Lange. But this is not always the case. The Lange Lumen collection, released in 2010, features one of the most unique and striking luminous displays to complement the brand's noteworthy movements. Since 2010, the Lumen collection has become a cornerstone of the Lange collections, and expanded to include a range of models. Today we are taking a closer look at the magic of the A. Lange & Söhne Lumen. Let's get into it.

What is "Lumen"?

The goal of the Lumen was to create a display that illuminates not only the immediate time display like traditional watches, but also much of the componentry typically hidden behind a dial surface. The solution was to craft a dial out of sapphire that blocks the majority of the light spectrum but allows UV to pass through to charge the luminous material. The result is a unique interplay between traditional designs and movements, and an incredibly modernist dial aesthetic. In low light environments, the full luminescent material (including elements shrouded by the sapphire dial) illuminate to reveal a unique wrist presence unlike other watches on the market. Additionally, the semi-transparent dial gives a look into the top side of the movement, typically hidden from the view of all but the watchmaker. These pieces are among the most exclusive, rare pieces in all of Lange's collections, and remain extremely coveted by collectors worldwide.

Lange Zeitwerk Lumen 2010

The launch of the Lumen collection came in 2010 with the Zeitwerk Lumen. The Zeitwerk, presented the previous year, was the first serially produced watch with instantaneously jumping numerals. The watch was a brilliant mechanical achievement, and one of Lange's most notable watches to this day. The Lumen model added a significant depth to the watch, allowing visibility of the jumping wheels through the semi-transparent dial surface. This not only is a cool look into the top of a movement typically obscured by a dial, but also allows unique visualization of the jumping numerals. For a watch whose essence is so directly steeped in the mechanical wonder of a jumping large time display, this adds a truly unique effect. The Zeitwerk Lumen was limited in production to 100 pieces.

Grand Lange 1 Lumen 2013

The Grand Lange 1 collection was the second to receive the Lumen treatment when in 2013 the brand extended the same aesthetics of the Zeitwerk to the traditional Lange 1 design language. The initial idea was to provide a look into the mechanics of the signature Lange 1 outsized date. Much like the Zeitwerk's jumping numerals, the Lange 1's large numeral aesthetic is a signature of the brand, and given a Lumen smoked sapphire dial, the traditional Lange 1 takes on a whole new dimension of sportiness. With a suede strap or something textured, this watch sheds its polished aesthetic for something far more casual. The platinum piece was made in just 200 pieces, and made the Lange Lumen a formal series not just an isolated reference.

Grand Lange 1 Moonphase Lumen 2016

On the heels of the Grand Lange 1 Lumen came the Grand Lange 1 Moonphase Lumen in 2016. Also limited to 200 pieces, it's easy to assume this watch was a simple undertaking, but in truth, the moonphase complication added some serious complication to the execution. Typically, a Lange moonphase is set on a gold plate and painted. Instead, for the Lumen variant presented here, the moonphase was also established on a sapphire disk, with a completely unique luminescent star display unlike anything else on the market. A subtle variation on the Grand Lange 1 Lumen, this model has remained a favorite in the Lumen collections.

Datograph Up/Down Lumen

Next to the Lange 1 and Zeitwerk, the Datograph is one of the pillars of the Lange collections. Released as the first serially produced manually wound chronograph to feature an in-house movement, the Datograph changed the face of the luxury watch industry in the 21st century. It was natural that Lange extended the coveted Lumen layout to the Datograph collection, and the brand began with a 2018 platinum variant limited to 200 examples. This piece gives a look into much of the components on the top of a chronograph movement never seen on traditional pieces. Additionally, like many of the other models we've covered, the signature big date is visible through the transparent dial. This iteration transforms the Datograph into a much sportier chrono.

Lange Zeitwerk Lumen Honeygold

In 2021, Lange revisited the Zeitwerk with the Lumen collection, this time bringing their own form of gold to the collection. "Honeygold" is a unique 750 gold alloy with extreme strength and a warm tone unlike yellow or rose golds. Reserved for only the most exclusive models, Honeygold paired with a Lumen dial is a winning combination for an exclusive release for A. Lange & Söhne. 200 pieces were made, and the watch exploited an updated caliber L043.9 with 72 hours of power reserve. While the original Zeitwerk introduced the Lumen collection for the first time, the Honeygold iteration reflected the many ways in which Lange has improved their watchmaking from the 2010s.

Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon Lumen

If the standard Datograph Lumen above wasn't complex enough for you, Lange stepped up the complication with a 25 year commemorative model released in Honeygold. The reference 740.055FE was crafted from Lange's proprietary Honeygold, and flaunts the Lumen architecture on top of a perpetual calendar tourbillon chronograph base. It's one of the most complicated chronographs on the market, and the added dial sophistication makes this one of the most coveted Langes in the world. Only 50 of these masterpieces were made. This piece marked a shift in the Lange production approach to make these limited editions even more exclusive and desirable, dropping the production numbers to a quarter of most of the other limited editions (all 200 pieces except the original Zeitwerk which had 100 pieces).

Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Lumen

This year Lange released arguably the most incredible release in the Lumen collection with the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar. One of the coolest Lange watches in general, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar incorporates the full perpetual calendar layout within the existing Lange 1 design architecture. This was a bafflingly difficult technical achievement, since the mechanical framework of the movement had to work within the aesthetic confines of the Lange 1 design language. Add to that the beautiful tourbillon visible on the caseback, and you have a complicated, beautifully executed, exclusive timepiece. The Lumen dial simply is the icing on the top. All told, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Lumen was limited to a meager 50 examples in platinum as the latest addition in Lange's storied collection.

Summary

The Lange Lumen collection has remained Lange's modern exploratory laboratory for exclusive limited editions. Combining the traditional watchmaking chops of Germany's premier haute horlogerie master with the contemporary appeal of a smoked sapphire dial, the Lumen collection continues to house some of the most exclusive pieces the marque makes, from extremely complex movements to exclusive materials like Honeygold. Additionally, the Lumen family uniquely ties watches from diverse corners of the Lange collections together with a common thread of sophistication. As Lange continues to add to the assembly of brilliantly sophisticated Lumen watches, we pause to see just how far Lange has come. We can't wait to see what Lange brings next!
