INTRODUCING: The All-New Montblanc 1858 Iced Sea Collection

One of the most popular categories in watchmaking is the diver’s watch - which is peculiar because we haven’t seen too many Dive Watches released at Watches & Wonders this year. Montblanc, a brand better-known for their more classical timepieces, decides to try their hand at making an attractive dive watch at an even more attractive price - This, of course, is the new 1858 Iced Sea Collection in blue, green, and black.

THE JUICE:

The dial of the watch demands your attention more than any of the other details of the watch. The glacial-patterned dial is only 0.5mm thick, and is made with an almost-forgotten technique called gratté boisé. This technique allows Montblanc to add incredible depth to the dial, despite its incredible slimness. The colors of the dials are also glacial-inspired, with the blue representing glacial ice with air bubbles within it, the green characterizes an iceberg with microscopic snow algae, and the black portrays glacial ice with no air bubbles in it.

But what about the actual diving features? It is a dive watch, after all. The 1858 Iced Sea boasts 300m of water resistance, ISO 6425 diving certification, Super-Luminova coated indices, and a ceramic bezel on every model. Additionally, each watch undergoes 500 hours of testing at Montblanc’s own laboratory for durability. The glacial theme on a dive watch is not something commonly seen, and it is fascinating to see a brand come out with something so unique as their initial step into new territory. For an attempt to enter the dive watch world, Montblanc is certainly making a great first impression with this release.

It’s always interesting to see a brand branching out and exploring new territory, especially in a bold way. Montblanc fit technology and style into their 1858 Iced Sea, while also bringing in a unique glacial theme. This is a diving watch that still looks spectacular. It’s a healthy mix between fashion and function.
